Spring Cleaning and Maintenance

March 18, 2014
Spring has finally arrived to Elizabeth City and Northeast North Carolina (and we, for one, hope it's here to stay). Spring brings with it plenty of opportunities to refresh our houses and our yards. It's an opporunity to open the windows and air out the house, switch out winter clothes for warmer clothes, and revive our flower beds.

However, spring also comes with a built in reminder that there are things we should do around the house:

- Reverse the direction of fans so that air is blown down instead of up
- Change air filters (though this should really be done every 60 days or so, depending on specific environmental factors)
- Open up vents to crawlspaces
- Change batteries in smoke and CO detectors (unless equipped with tamper resistant lithium battery)
- Replace or thoroughly clean drip trays on stoves

These are just a few of the things that anybody (tenants or homeowners) can do. It's also a good idea to service appliances and HVAC systems while the weather is mild (especially important for rentals to ensure systems are performing optimally). It can also be a good opportunity to spruce up the outside of the house by pressure washing to clean off any mildew that might have accumulated over the winter months.

What home maintenance tasks do you prefer to tackle in the spring?
